My 11 Month Old

Vincent is 11 months old today. Here's a picture I took of him today. He is crawling around like crazy and is starting to kneel up to things to get things on short tables and chairs and couches.

He gets into all kinds of things, but especially likes wires. (Like father, like son, I guess.) He's sneaky too!

He is still a pretty happy kid and the girls love to "mommy" him and take care of him. Anytime I tell him not to get into the movies, I have a second and a third telling him the same thing. I wonder how they've gotten so bossy. Hmm.

Resolutions!

Ransom Family Goals for 2009
1. Attend Temple as a couple monthly.
2. Work to get out of Debt by:
-a. Only eat out as a family once a month.
-b. Make a better budget.
-c. Tighten down the grocery budget.
-d. No Video Game or other new toy buying.

Cousin Party!

Today I hosted a party at my house for cousins on my mom's side of the family. Some of them we haven't seen in 5 1/2 years. Others who were invited, but didn't come, it's been way longer than that. It was great to see the ones who came though. There were 33 people at my house today. Although, 20 of those people were in my own extended family (my parent's, two brothers and their families, my sister and her family, and my family). My mom's older sister and older brother came. Two other of their brothers weren't able to come. We did an exchange of small gifts and chatted and nibbled on snacks everyone brought. We did take a lot of pictures too. It was nice, despite that.

Before the party, Andy's parents stopped by to see the kids and see their presents. They were here when some of my siblings came to open the presents from each other and do the cousin exchange for us. My oldest brother came, but they had forgotten the presents, so his wife got to drive back to the other side of Kennewick to get them. While we waited, Elizabeth came up with a game. She decided that we would all pick our favorite Christmas song and sing it together. She was in charge. She picked who she wanted and ran the show. I think it's so cute and funny. One of my brothers (who will not be named #2) likes to be contrary and was teasing and bugging her. She just argued right back with him. Elizabeth got a big stuffed Pet Shop that is yellow, but it says on the tag that it's a pig. Interesting. Olivia got a little pony and a fun pop up book. She also got a porcelain doll from the other exchange.

My family, minus Janessa, Jes, and Jackson who had to leave before the second party started. And at this point, Brant and Tina were driving through Nampa, Idaho to get here.

After the party, my Aunt Roma, Uncle Gordon, and their daughter and son-in-law went to the Temple, so I watched their three kids for them since they were already here and our kids were already playing. My cousin, Beth's, youngest daughter is 6 today, so she and Elizabeth are best buddies. They have been walking around holding hands the whole time.
I made some tator tots to feed them and opened up cans of peaches and pears for dinner. Their oldest told me that he's "not much of a fruit and veggie guy". Then, what do you eat?? One of the girls said that she didn't like them, but I put a few on her plate anyway and she ate them and then asked for more. I guess she did. The other daughter said she wasn't hungry, but a half hour later had an apple, so I guess she was. I think the first daughter ate like four apples here already. I think she's going to have some tummy trouble. Yuck. At least I have small ones.

Soon, one of our friends who used to come to our game night a few years ago is coming with her husband and one of our regular game night buddies is coming too.
We will just have a day full of parties! We love it.
Friday we went to Andy's parents' house for dinner with his uncle and aunt and their kids and then went to a friend's house to play games until 11pm. Another fun couple came over too. We played Settlers, a guessing game, Scattergories, and another Settlers, but with Cities and Knights. I almost won the second Settlers. So close. Andy won it right before my turn. Between the three couples there were 11 kids. Good thing they have a playroom and family room with movies downstairs. It was pretty nice. Vincent just chewed on some crackers and crawled around under the table or played with the empty plastic dog bowl. He had a lot of fun until he got too tired to play.

Christmas Day

Our Christmas Tree all decked out. Elizabeth said a tree is not complete without silver ball ornaments. I didn't feel like putting those up this year. I think there's enough on it.

I woke the kids up at 7:30 so we could get on with it!
On any day we want them to sleep in, they're happy to be up early, but on Christmas, no, we have to coax them out of bed! Andy went out to check to see if Santa had come (per his family's tradition) while the kids and I waited in the hallway for a picture.
Then, the kids ran right out to their gifts from Santa! Santa brought Elizabeth a Littlest Pet Shop house, Olivia a Barbie car with a Barbie, and Vincent a ride-on train toy. He also brought Andy and I a propane gas stove and he brought me a beautiful onyx and gold necklace and bracelet set.
The girls went through their stockings comparing the things they got with each other. They got mostly the same things, just different colors, pictures, etc. They love gum, nail polish, and hair brushes.
Andy passed around the presents from under the tree and we watched each person open theirs. They were really happy with all the things I picked out. That's what makes me happy.

Olivia really liked the Barbie from the Diamond Castle movie. She got the boy to go with it too. She carried them around all day and was making them dance by holding their hands together. That's right, not too close now! Although, even Uncle David made them kiss!
This is Elizabeth's favorite of the pet shops she received. It's a dragonfly. She noticed that the animals have different shapes in their eyes and divided them up by that. (hearts, diamonds, stars, half a ying yang, etc).

After opening presents, the girls had some hot cocoa and cinnamon bread with me before playing with all the toys.
They were able to play for a good hour or so while Andy, Vincent, and I got ready to go to Andy's parents' house for brunch at 11am. We are so lucky to have so much family close by. We love it. We do like to have our own Christmas at home on Christmas morning though!
After brunch, we all opened presents and did our exchanges together. It was so fun. We are always too spoiled though!

Grandpa Paul and Grandma Ellen came for brunch and presents with us. They are so great!


Elizabeth got a different house from Grandpa George and Grandma Shirley. She was so surprised that she fell back into the couch and was "oohing and awwing"! It was such a great reaction. Immediately after that, she ran over to them to hug and say thank you. What a polite child I have. Yea!

Later on, while Andy's dad and brothers-in-laws went to the movies, we drove to Walla Walla to see my parents and sister and her family. It was great to visit with them and to see my kids being so happy. It's always a good visit, but Elizabeth always is sad on the way home because "We shoulda left sooner, so I don't have to go to bed when we get home!" and crying. She doesn't like to get home when it's dark (which is kinda hard in the winter, since it's dark at 4!) and she wanted to play with her pet shops, of course!

'Twas the Night Before Christmas...

Since I wrapped all the presents a week or so ago, I just had to add tags and ribbons to them, so the kids helped me with that Christmas Eve day. They also all found a good use for the boxes the presents were in after they were emptied. The girls helped cut ribbon, pick out tags, and put presents under the tree. They were awfully curious what was in each present, especially some that made noise. Elizabeth took these pictures of Vincent and Olivia in the box. I was a little worried that they would care more about the boxes on Christmas too!

Even Elizabeth and Olivia wanted to play in the biggest box. Good thing I ordered presents online! And, bonus, they all looked at the camera! (Too bad Elizabeth's hair was amuck.)

We spent Christmas Eve at Andy's parents' house in Kennewick with Sara, David, and Sami and Torrie and Brad and Andy's parents, George and Shirley.

We had a delicious enchilada meal and then we did a short program with a few carols, a story, some memories of favorite (or not so much) Christmas pasts, and we brought our nativity puppets to share. My mom made the three older siblings in my family a set before the last three siblings were married. Andy added a Herod to our set two years ago and a few nights ago, Andy made a star, camel, and Cesar to complete our set. Now he wants to add a few more too! The pictures are great. I love how everyone gets into it. I just like to sit and take the pictures of everyone so excited.

I love that when I ask Elizabeth why we have Christmas, she doesn't immediately go to presents. Instead, she says, "Because Jesus was born on Christmas." That did take some training, by the way. I want that to be the most important part of Christmas for her because at this age they are so close to the Spirit and can keep that with them, if I can just help them. That's a goal of mine.

After the program, we hung out and talked for a while and then went home to get ready for Santa's visit. We put the kids to bed and I tidied the house so the kids could get right to playing after opening presents (plus, I wanted to throw out some colored pages we didn't need cluttering up the counter).

Then, I went to bed for a fitful nights sleep. I can never sleep the night before Christmas.

Our snowmen...

We made the dough for the snowmen in the previous post and baked it for the 2 hours (like the instructions said) and then let them set overnight (like the instructions said). Since I read the instructions after posting, I found another snowman craft to do with clay pots. I like how they turned out more too!

I had to go and get white paint anyway, so I picked up some clay pots and found a 18 inch Nutcracker to add to my collection that was discounted 70 percent and then the lady at the register saw a crack in the leg (long, but I didn't even notice it) and discounted me more so it was $2.44. Originally $29.99. Nice. I love it. It fits in perfectly and it's taller than my others.

We did the clay pot snowmen yesterday and then finished up our salt dough snowmen today.
These ones are the ones that I did without the girls. I couldn't get twigs and didn't try very hard, so I just used toothpicks. The stuff by their ears are earmuffs and the snow-women have buttons on their heads too. Nothing too fancy. I didn't want small things falling off all over the house. These won't even stand up, so I'm still not sure what to do with them.
I did a lot of these too, but the girls helped me make the balls, painted the splotchy white, picked colors, and tied their knots for the scarves. Elizabeth painted the earmuffs on hers too.

The salt dough cracked really bad on the back and they didn't stay together very well. Only one snowman fell apart and the others weren't mushed and cute like the ones in the pro picture. The girls were happy to be doing crafts and wanted to do even more than I let them do.

Maybe we'll make snowflakes tomorrow. I forgot about that craft until I saw some in Christy's window. The girls will love that. They love to cut things out.

Elizabeth liked it a lot. We bought her a little one after she saw a giant one like this at my family Eve of Christmas Eve get together when she was almost 1. My sister-in-law (only paid $5) gave one to Elizabeth's boy cousins, who played with it for a few minutes and then surrendered it to Elizabeth. We had to go out and get her one too, but didn't want to pay 30 bucks for one in the store. I told one of my friends that Elizabeth was crawling all over it that whole night and she said that her kids didn't care about their's anymore and that we could have it. Awesome! Here Elizabeth is still loving it when she was two. Olivia loved it too, but I didn't seem to get any pictures of it. Oops.

Snowmen!

Look at these cute salt dough snowmen! We are going to make some tomorrow. Anyone want to join us? I just hope I can find something to work for the twig arms. I hope I have white paint too. I'm going to have to check now.

Video and Fun Pictures

Here's a video of Vincent playing with our Friend magazine. He (before I started the camera) was pulling it off the coffee table and "reading" it and then would push it into the bottom section of the coffee table. He pushed it in several times before getting the next one down to look at. He didn't even bump his head on those edges yet either. Notice towards the end when Vincent sneezes out his binky and then Olivia picks it up to give it to him that he won't just let her put it in, he checks it and then puts it in himself. Independent kid. He is finally starting to want to pull a few ornaments off the tree, but I put the ones that can't break (as easily) on the bottom, so it's not a big deal. He just looks at them for a few minutes and then leaves them behind for something else when he sees something nicer (or when Olivia tells him "No NO Vincent!" and takes it away from him.-I guess Elizabeth does that too. At least I don't have to worry about disciplining him much. The girls will take care of that for me, right? Busybodies.) They are little mommies.

After the video, Elizabeth wandered around the house taking pictures of things. She's really interested in taking pictures and does a pretty good job too! The picture on my profile is one she took a month or so ago.

Just for fun, I'll talk about our Primary Worker party tonight. (That's right. We just got home and I'm doing it already, Joe J. and Aaron!) We had a delicious meal of party potatoes and ham and rolls with salads and desserts that we (the workers) brought. Andy and I were both released this year from Primary, so we were still invited. It's the second best party our ward has each year. We'll have to find a way to be invited again next year. (the first best party is our Ward's Chili Chowder feed. Yum!)
We had an acapella quartet come and sing to us. They told a little joke. One of the guys is in our ward and his wife is in the Primary Presidency so he was talking about how much his wife liked to shop and especially liked when things were on sale. She'll buy anything that's marked down. In fact, once she came home with the escalator. Some people laughed and then he said that we were the first group to get it. I said "If no one got it yet, why'd he keep telling it?" The girl next to me said that she still didn't get it. I had to explain to her that the escalator had a sign on it that said it was down. It was marked down. I had to go through it like twice while trying not to laugh because they were still singing. I usually don't have to explain jokes. Hmm. Funny. Andy and I were silent (as much as we could) laughing about this little diversion.
Then we did our much waited for white elephant exchange. That is always so much fun. There is always a few gifts that are stolen over and over or someone that gets their present taken from them over and over. I think mine was stolen about 4 times, so I finally picked one under the tree. When we left there, there was about an inch of new snow on the ground. Still snowing too.

SNOW!

Elizabeth was begging to go and play in the snow on Sunday, but it was too cold still (and it was Sunday), so she went out today (still cold, but that's how it is when there's snow on the ground). She had a good time out there making snow angels, snowballs, and a path of footprints. She loves to do that. Olivia told me that she didn't want to go out and instead bundled on the couch and then decided ten minutes later (when her show was over) that she wanted to go out too. I bundled Vincent up and took him out for a picture. He has a cold, so he didn't stay out long, plus his little mittens would not stay on.Olivia and a little Elizabeth too.

I just dropped Elizabeth off at school (two hour delay mean no am kindergarten, but pm still goes.) And Andy just got back from Nutcracker and can stay home with Olivia and Vincent while I go back to the school for my day to help.Olivia chugging her precious milk and Elizabeth eats a slice of bread. They remind us every night, like we'd forget. "Me want milk." Yeah, we know. (And yes, still a little eye makeup there.-It's really hard to get off, I understand.)

Last night, we used the cool Christmas quilt my mom made for our family. It has trains and nutcrackers on it because that's what we like. She made one for all my siblings too. The idea is to have each person in the family take turns sleeping under it all through December. Andy put it over the girls while he read the scripture book and other books to them and then I used it while I read the first part of the #4 book (I think most of you know what I'm talking about BD).
Our car does awesome in the snow. We have to almost try to slide. I love that. We still are cautious and everything, but it's so great to not have to worry so much about that.
Enjoy the snow. Hopefully it's only around a little longer. And hopefully, it's not 14 degrees during the day much longer either. I hate the cold, but it really is nice here most of the year, so that makes up for it. It's pretty though.

Saturday Nutcracker

Mary (NaDell's mom), NaDell, Roma (NaDell's Aunt), a few Nutcracker dolls, Olivia, and Elizabeth at the matinee ballet.
Andy's Saturday follow-up: We did two performances today, and I didn't screw up either time. About the worst thing that happened was that I have a little bit of a rash where my makeup was. I think it wasn't the makeup but the vigor I used in washing it off. A little aloe vera gel and hopefully I'll be good as new tomorrow. We have one performance Sunday, and two Monday. For the Monday shows they haul in fifth graders from all over Tri-Cities and force a little culture on them, these shows are a shortened version, and a little more casual than the regular shows.

NaDell, Elizabeth, Olivia, Grandma Mary, and Aunt Roma came to the matinee show, but NaDell seems to have honored the request to not take pictures during the show, so there isn't any of my performance. You'd think Mary would have taken some, she's a hardcore picture taker, but NaDell says she didn't either. I guess you'll have to come see the show. Maybe next time I'll step on someone's dress.

NaDell's follow up-So, the kids, my mom, and my aunt went with me today to the Nutcracker Ballet. It was great. We were in the middle of the fourth row. It was so much fun. The girls quickly gave up on clapping though and started "whoot, whoot"-ing. It was kind of silly. Olivia was doing her little pointer finger dance during a few of the dances and both girls liked to watch Aunt Torrie and Daddy up on the stage. As soon as we sat down, I looked behind me and saw someone I used to work with (for like 5 years) and his wife and kids and a few grandkids. What a coincidence! (His grandson had to go to the bathroom about 10 minutes into the ballet and he had to get up-from the middle-to take him. Fun. Then, the little boy was asking if it was almost over and said at one point that he saw a lot of armpits. Kept me laughing.) Elizabeth told me that Andy took presents from kids 3 times. When the ballet was over, we went out the door of the theater to get autographs from some of the dancers. Elizabeth did this for us and told them that "her Aunt Torrie was in it and her dad was Torrie's partner." One of the girls at the end asked her which part was her favorite and she very diplomatically said, "The part you did." Then we all bought cookies and ate them. Yum.

After the show, we dropped my aunt and mom off at my house to get their cars and then ran to Kennewick to pick up Vincent from Andy's parents so they could get to the show on time for tonight. Then, we came back home, changed into warm clothes and went down to the park by the river for fun city fireworks, a Santa visit, and a boat parade.

Olivia has changed hers in the last two days to "lots and lots of Cinderella Polly Pockets" from a Barbie car. (Great!) And Vincent, of course, didn't ask for anything. They all smiled though and no one cried at this point!

The kids were all too cold (with reason) and it was snowing, so we went home after the Santa visit and fireworks. They all cried all through the parking lot. Fun for me! Let me tell you. (No, really, I'm sure you can imagine!) Plus, I'm pretty sure they were hungry. Oops, my fault totally! No wonder they were crabby.

Friday Nutcracker

Here's a picture of Andy and his sister, Torrie, at the Nutcracker. Yes, that is stage makeup. And yes, it is creepy to me!

Andy says that it was a success because he didn't step on anyone's dress or drop the doll ballerina girl that he carried off stage. (An actual girl that plays a doll-and he said he got the biggest of the five, but none of them are that big-they're ballerinas after all!)

He brought home fun gifts from the other couples and kids too. Bonus. One is a free pilates class. He says that I can have that one and I can go with Torrie. Sounds fun to try once.

Well, Elizabeth came in to talk to me (from her room where Olivia and Elizabeth were reading books for a break) when I was almost done with the last blog post and I realized that she needed a bath, badly! So, I had her go and start it. Olivia ran in to join her and then I started to change Vincent who blew out his diaper. Into the bath he went too! So, now my kids are all bathed and ready for a pajama party at 4:30pm. Only 3 1/2 hours until bedtime. Can't wait!
